There is something so special about welcoming a new baby into the family, but getting to photograph the bond between a brand-new baby and an incredibly proud big sister makes it even sweeter.

This little girl was an absolute dream for her newborn session. She slept through the entire thing without opening her eyes once—but somehow managed to give us smile after smile after smile. Seriously, I don’t know if I’ve ever had a newborn smile this much during a session! She was perfectly content, snuggly and apparently very happy to have her picture taken. A picture-perfect little princess. 🎀

And then there was big sister, who may have been just as excited about this session as the rest of us.

She was VERY involved in helping choose which headbands her baby sister should wear and couldn’t wait to show me the special dress she had picked out for their photos together. You could tell immediately just how proud she was of her new role.

One of my favorite moments from the session, though, happened when I wasn’t even photographing her.

While I was taking some of baby’s individual newborn portraits, Mom pulled out big sister’s own newborn photos. The two of them sat together looking through the images of when she was this tiny, talking about her newborn session while her brand-new baby sister was having hers.

I couldn’t help but think about how full-circle that moment was.

Someday, these two girls may be sitting together looking through these very photos—seeing just how tiny baby sister once was and how completely smitten big sister already was with her.

That’s one of the things I love most about newborn photography. We’re capturing those impossibly tiny details, sleepy smiles and newborn snuggles, but we’re also preserving what your family looked and felt like during this little chapter of your lives.

Because babies don’t stay this tiny for long. And neither do big sisters. ❤️

These two already have the sweetest bond, and judging by the way big sister held onto her and looked at her throughout the session, I have a feeling this little girl has a built-in best friend for life. 🥹💕
